Electricity passes through a complex system to reach the consumer. First it is produced, then it passes through transmission lines, where through transformers it passes to distribution lines, and from there, through other transformers it reaches the consumer.

To help you better understand Kosovo's power system, we have presented the process broken down into steps. It all starts with the production of electricity and ends with the consumer. This journey consists of: Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Supply and finally reaches the Consumer, so to you.

1. Kosovo Energy Corporation TPP A & TPP B and renewable resources

Considering that the main source of energy in Kosovo is lignite, then the generation of electricity is based mainly on lignite power plants (TPP A and TPP B managed by KEK) and partly on Renewable Sources.

Kosovo ranks fifth in the world for lignite reserves, which is the most important energy resource of Kosovo, which supplies most of the total electricity production through "TPP Kosova A which has 3 active units and TPP" Kosova B with two working units”. Both of these power plants together reach the maximum production capacity of about 900 MWh.

2. Transmission tower and substation (KOSTT)

The only Operator of the Electricity System, Transmission and Market in Kosovo is KOSTT. It is 100% owned by the Assembly of Kosovo.

This enterprise manages the Transmission System of the Republic of Kosovo by operating with high voltage levels of 400 kV, 220 kV and 110 kV.

Currently, Kosovo's transmission network is connected to neighboring countries through seven cross-border lines.

Recently, Kosovo's power grid (energy network) has finally emerged from the regulatory bloc with Serbia, Montenegro and northern Macedonia, which means that Kosovo will henceforth control its energy borders, operating as an independent regulatory zone within the Kosovo-Albania bloc.

3. Distribution Substation (KEDS)

Regarding the distribution of electricity, in Kosovo the distribution exclusivity belongs to the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS). KEDS distributes electricity to the end customer, manages and maintains electricity distribution assets.

Medium Voltage lines 35 kV, 20kV and 10 kV are included within KEDS together with the respective substations. KEDS currently has over 600 thousand customers spread across the country and about 2200 employees distributed in 7 districts: (Prishtina, Gjilan, Ferizaj, Prizren, Gjakova, Peja and Mitrovica).

4. Supplier

The supply of electricity to customers is enabled by licensed suppliers. Currently, KESCO has the Public Service Obligation set by the Regulator to supply customers with the right of universal service. Customers who are supplied by licensed suppliers are: household, commercial and industrial.

5. Customers

The chain link of the Kosovo power system ends at the customer.

The main institutions responsible for managing the energy sector in Kosovo are: the Ministry of Economic Development and the Energy Regulatory Office.
