One of the objectives of the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company is to follow the latest trends in technology by using the most efficient devices and methods to increase customer satisfaction and reliability.

To learn more about some of the latest technologies used by KEDS and what is their function in practice, read the text below.

Installments of FIDs (Fault Indicator Detector)

One of the latest technology that we began using in 2021 is the Fault Indicator Detector, which serves to locate various defects that occur in the network within a very short period of time.

KEDS has recently installed the Fault Indicator Detector (FID) on the 35 [kV] Prizren 1 - Zhur overhead line, and the same FID can be monitored by the existing SCADA system.

Thus, if any breakdown occurs in 35 [kV] Prizren 1 – Zhur line, the indicators will monitor the recorded currents, and depending on the defect a specific flashing light (LED) will be generated.

If the defect occurred between the supply substation and the place where the indicators are located, then it will be implied that the defect occurred in that part.

The use of such indicators reduces the time of finding breakdowns to the absolute minimum. Also, another important benefit of installing these FIDs is the significant reduction in the duration of power outages.

The installation of FIDs is expected to continue in the future as well, in other important 35 [kV] lines, where along with their installation, their integration into the system will also be completed.

Distribution Management System (DMS)

Along with SCADA, one of the latest smart systems used in KEDS is the Distribution Management System (DMS).

This system helps the control center and field operating personnel monitor and control the power distribution system.

DMS includes monitoring, analysis, control, optimization, training, and planning tools and all of these operate in a common representation of the entire distribution network.

During the last year and also this year, KEDS has been in the process of preparing complete data for the electricity network in order to integrate it into the system.

Installation of SCADA in distribution switchgear

The SCADA system for a long time now has been monitoring and controlling remotely all medium voltage substations. KEDS after the implementation of monitoring and controlling of the network at the medium voltage level has continued with the implementation of this process at the low voltage level.

Knowing the benefits that this system has brought so far, it is seen more than necessary that this system continues to be implemented in some other big areas of the network.

So, in 2021 the SCADA system has started to be implemented in plants 10 (20) /0.4 [kV].

The preparation for the realization of this installation started in 2021 and is continuing in the district of Mitrovica, Peja, and Prizren to later continue with other districts.

The benefits of installing SCADA on switchgear are enormous because such integration will help monitor and control the most critical areas of the distribution network.
