Urban areas are very populated and it can often happen that a single pole is used not only by the electrical network, but also by different cable, internet, and other operators. The same happens with certain underground areas where almost shared spaces can be used for underground power cables or even water pipes.

Often, in the absence of information, construction companies or even individuals take the action to dig underground without verifying the information in KEDS or the relevant institutions if that area is safe for digging.

If a company does not have prior information about a certain area where it needs to excavate, it should still verify the safety of the area before starting work.

Improper and unsafe excavations can damage power lines, transformers, poles or energy assets in general. The issue is serious because such damages can also interrupt the supply of electricity to our customers for long hours.

In practice, damage to a power distribution or communication cable means stopping production at manufacturing factories, disrupting flights at airports or closing shopping malls, putting businesses out of business until the damage is repaired.

We must bear in mind that according to the laws in force, any damage that is caused in the network by negligence or carelessness, the material responsibility is transferred to the person/company that caused it.

Please note that when a physical person or company causes damage to the network while digging underground, a police case is opened and the person or company may also be prosecuted. The damage caused is repaired by the KEDS team, but our company then sends all invoices spent on repairing the damage to the person or company that caused it.

According to KEDS data, from 2021 until today, about 131 external companies have caused damage to KEDS assets, damages which had to be compensated in order to make the necessary repair. KEDS is very often faced with such cases and, as a result, consumers are left without electricity.

Less damage to underground cables means less direct repair costs for these companies, less electrocution risk and fewer power outages for consumers, which equates to zero property damage for construction companies or others who damage our assets.

When each company is careful during their work, consulting with KEDS in advance, always respecting the construction permits that include the layout of the underground network, they simultaneously maintain public safety in the country and take care of the common community spaces we have.
